Twitter Adwords Launch Monetizes Messaging!
The announcement from Twitter on April 13th of the launch of their own Adwords version, is recognition of successful mass online marketing penetration by the microblogging service that all businesses must now engage with if they are to keep up with the evolving web.
The new keyword-based advertising, built upon the billion-dollar Google PPC business model is called ‘Promoted Tweets, which will display ads containing SEO keyword links advertisers have bought when Twitter users search for those keywords.
When a Twitter user searches for a word an advertiser has purchased, the promoted message will show up at the top of the results, even if it was created and ‘tweeted’ much earlier. The posts will indicate they are promoted by the company in small type, and when someone rolls over a promoted post with a cursor, it turns yellow.
Twitter intends Promoted Tweets to enhance the communications that businesses are already having with their customers via their service and will no doubt be incorporated into across the board company marketing strategies, reinforcing up to date brand identity perception.
The implications for eCommerce businesses are potentially enormous as Twitter plans to extend Promoted Tweets by ‘forced ad’ viewing. Another opportunity Promoted Tweets offer, that at first sight appears intriguing, is the ability to take promotional advantage and “ increase awareness” during a Twitter crisis!
The key criteria will be ‘keeping ad quality and relevance high’ in revenue creating campaigns and dealing with the ever present ‘spamming’ issue. Many businesses will need to keep a close eye on their website analytics and check visitor traffic as Promoted Tweets starts to influence search engine results.
The phenomenal mass messaging success of Twitter as a leading social media platform, together with Facebook, has been increasingly attracting the business mainstream and their adoption of the Twitter Adwords service could prove to be a smart move for companies currently investing into Google Adwords.
Very soon, every website will need to have Twitter functionality and now may be a good time to start!
